Dante's Inferno (Divine Comedy)?

Is Dante's Divine Comedy just his imagination or is it an account of what he believe or he really went through? I have read the Wikipedia article and it really seems thought out. Also, would you believe in it. I believe that there is a theory like the 9 circles. That one is punished accordingly to their sin/crime and that there is a limbo.
