Were the Knights of Templar actually Satanists or were they set up like The Davinci Code describes?

Welp, I came upon this subject during my time studying different philosophies and world history. Suddenly the topic of the Knights of Templar came up and I learned two different versions of their history. 1. They were God fearing Christians who went on crusades, but then for whatever reason the Pope at the time charged them with treason and witchcraft, and then most of them got executed on the fabled Friday 13th. Then 2. They actually were Satanists witchcraft loving devotees who used the Christian slant as a mask for their true intentions, of which the Pope found out and promptly did away with them on Friday 13th. So I'm not sure if I have all the facts correct, correct me if I don't, but in short which version is true?
