I just finished the first Twilight novel, but where was all the gore in the end?

Ok, I was really getting into it in the end when James snapped Bella's leg in two and bashed her brains against the mirrored wall. I was so pumped, I was like, yeah, Edward's gonna come any moment now and rip this guy's head off with his teeth and dismember him with his pinkie finger...then I got to the next chapter and was like, WTF? Where were all the gory details?? This IS a book about vampires, after all! Do they have fighting scenes between James and Edward in the movie? I haven't seen it yet.
